When it comes to furniture and general design choices for the house, Josh and I actually have quite different tastes. He likes a rustic/cozy/cabin-ish look, while I love open industrial loft spaces with white walls and concrete floors. He thinks loft spaces feel like asylums, and I think country cottages are mostly too cutesy.
Luckily for him, my overriding principle is to take design cues from the original era/style a house was built in. If I had a craftsman bungalow, I'd be hunting for mission furniture, and if I had a San Francisco painted lady, you better believe I'd have some great Victorian pieces in there. Our house in Vermont has a country farmhouse vibe to it, and while I was worried we might veer into duck duck goose cutesy country territory, we have happily found a compromise that suits us both and fits the house like a glove -- Shaker. A classic piece of Shaker furniture is timeless, durable, completely functional, and feels right at home in a country house. Because of the quality and craftsmanship (solid hardwoods, beautiful dovetail joinery, sturdy construction) that goes into making Shaker style furniture, however, most pieces are sadly out of our budget right now. We are going to have to do some planning and saving and buy pieces slowly as we go.
In the meantime, I like to browse Craigslist, Etsy, and Ebay for Shaker furniture and envision pieces in our house. Today's wish list is a roundup of vintage and handmade Shaker pieces for sale on Etsy. Hope you enjoy browsing the list as much as I enjoyed making it!
