Winter Begins

Well, here we are at the start of winter. I must admit this snow has got me down. Little case of the winter blues going on. I was always excited about the start of winter when I lived in the city. I honestly loved the snow and by November it felt good to pull out comfy boots and sweaters. But winter out here is just harder. I could go on, but I will leave it at that. Anyone else have snow yet? How are you feeling about it?

  2. The top photo looks like it should be on a postcard. Wow. I'm a native Floridian and I was in the military in Massachusetts during the winter of 1983. I think the thing that was the hardest for me was the lack of sun. But it was beautiful. Best you all, Claire!

  4. I grew up in the PNW and I find the 4 seasons still invigorating after 30+ years in the Maine country. My best remedy for snow is a pair of snowshoes and a dog that needs a walk. Winter is my favorite season...I'll take snow over months of drizzle any day!

    1. Good point, we need to get some snow shoes. We were just talking about this yesterday. Good thing we already have the dogs :)

  5. It always surprises me to see snow. I have absolutely no idea how it works. Do you have someone from the council who removes it from the roads? How deep does it get? Do people mostly stay indoors? Doesn't your face get snap frozen when you walk outside? I shiver uncontrollably at about 10 degrees, I don't think snow is for me! I also think I'd put on about fifty kilos what with the appeal of fireside chocolate and not wanting to move past the fire. Love the photos though, they look so pristine and quiet.

    1. The town removes snow from the main roads, but we are on a "class 3" road, which means we have to do it ourselves for our road and driveway. We have a plow for the truck. When it is snowing heavily Josh has to get up in the middle of the night and plow to keep up with it. It gets up to feet deep on the unplowed areas during the winter. Never gets warm enough to melt everything off and so it just keeps piling. When it is under 20 degrees or so your face will get numb after being outside for a while and it feels weird to talk. Cozy fires and cider are nice, but after 6 months most people are ready for the SUN. A lot of people in our area have houses in warmer climates and go there for the winter. That is sounding very good to me right about now :)

    3. Oh you must be talking in Farenheit I just realised. I meant 10 degrees Celcius, which is about 50 F I think. Wow at you having to do that work for your road yourself - I imagine investing in a plow is a necessity! If you need a warmer clime to escape to, just pop on down to Sydney and we can show you around. :)

    4. Australia! Lucky you! Hope to visit there one day. I grew up in southern California so I imagine the weather is somewhat similar. When you are used to those warm temps a 50 degree F day *IS* cold.

  6. Hang in there! From a fellow "winter blues sufferer", I hear you! I highly recommend you get one of those lights for people with SAD. (Seasonal Affective Disorder) They are about $100 and worth every penny. I sit in front of mine everyday for at least a half hour. That, and be sure to take plenty of Vitamin D! http://www.amazon.com/Day-Light-Seasonal-Affective-Disorder-DL930/dp/B0009MFUWC
